It is the question we get asked more than any other, usually followed by “…and can I put it up the day before?” The short answer: indoors, weeks. Outdoors, a day or two. Here is the longer answer, with what actually makes the difference.
Indoors: 2–4 weeks, sometimes longer
Our garlands are air-filled, not helium, so nothing sinks overnight. In a normal room away from radiators and direct sun, a garland will look full and glossy for at least two weeks and often a month or more. Plenty of customers keep theirs up long after the party. That also means we can install a day or two ahead if your venue allows, with no loss of quality on the day.
Outdoors: plan for the day itself
Three things shorten a balloon’s life outside: sun, heat and wind. UV light makes latex go cloudy (oxidise) within hours in bright sunshine, heat expands the air inside and can pop the tighter balloons, and wind rubs balloons against each other and the frame. For outdoor events we install on the day, choose a shaded spot where we can, use weighted frames and pick finishes that cope best.
What about hot venues, marquees and conservatories?
Treat a conservatory or a marquee in July like outdoors: glass magnifies heat and sun. If the display is going next to a window, we will suggest moving it a metre or two into the room; it makes a real difference.
Chrome, pastel and matte: does the finish matter?
Chrome (metallic) balloons hold their shine well indoors but show oxidation fastest in sun. Matte and pastel balloons are a little more forgiving outside. Foil numbers and letters last for weeks regardless.
Five tips to make your garland last
- Keep it out of direct sunlight, even indoors.
- Keep it away from radiators, ovens and candles.
- Do not let anyone lean on it or hang things from it.
- If it is outdoors, bring it in overnight if you can.
- Takedown is included, and we recycle what we can.
